Simple, 3 Ingredient, Natural Lotion Recipe
Introduction
This post will focus on what we use for moisturizing our skin. Of all the organs, our skin is the biggest, capable of absorbing much of what we put on it. Variables such as duration of exposure, type of skin exposed (thickness, vascularity, age), and amount of surface area exposed will influence absorption. Some say we absorb everything, some say little, and some say 50-60% of what we put on our skin we absorb. You can find arguments and debates all over the internet. Whether it’s 2% or 100%, we don’t want anything we can’t eat absorbed into our bodies.
This is why we choose to prioritize what goes into the products we interact with daily and look for ones that have the least amount of harmful chemicals. The list spans from cleaning products to clothing material to filtering the water we shower in and continues.
The best way to eliminate your exposure to product chemicals is to make your own that has absolutely none!
We have stopped using face washes and skin care products for quite some time and have been playing around with different combinations of natural ingredients we feel are safe and nourishing for our skin. The following recipe is one we have been happily using. Our skin feels soft and healthy after applying it. The best part is - we have control over the ingredients being used, and we get to choose our scent!
There really is no wrong way to go about making this lotion. You can use any of these ingredients on their own as a moisturizer, so the combination is really up to you and what consistency you prefer. The below combination is one we have liked for easy spreading.
We have played around with adding beeswax to one of our previous batches but found it was stiffer and harder to apply. Feel free to play around with your ratios and add whatever you are comfortable with! We may try adding collagen peptides to our next batch.
Ingredients/Supplies
Organic 100% Grass-Fed Beef Tallow
Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil
Pure Essential Oil
8 oz Glass Jars
Instructions
Step 1:
Melt the tallow in a water bath.
We used 8 oz glass jars and placed them in a small pan on the burner set to a medium heat. We placed tallow into the jars and allowed it to melt until the melted tallow took up about ⅔ of the jar.
This step will take the longest.
Step 2:
Turn off heat and add last 2 ingredients.
Once the tallow has melted, turn off the heat but do not remove the pan from the burner. Next, fill up the rest of your jar (the last 1/3) with fractionated coconut oil. Top off with your choice of essential oils.
For this batch, I chose vanilla and Chris chose cedarwood. We added around 20 drops each.
Step 3:
Mix.
Stir the ingredients together. This should only take a couple of seconds. The liquid should look well mixed and pretty clear.
Step 4:
Let harden & enjoy!
Remove jars from the pan and put them into the refrigerator to allow for mixture to harden/cool.
This should take a couple of hours.
Conclusion
This lotion is great for everything and can be applied to your body, feet, face, hair, and beard if you have one. Use your finger to scoop some out, rub it in your palms, and apply. It will be greasy for a moment, but absorbs quickly!
Enjoy how great your skin feels after applying a product you made at home, and thank yourself for nurturing your body safely and healthily!
